Many famous authors (E.M Forster, Beatrix Potter, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen) were born or have lived significant periods of their lives in London. Crucial events in many well-loved stories also take place in London: A platform in Kings Cross is an important location in a certain children's fantasy novel, not to mention 221b Baker Street. As a city, London has captured the imagination and the lives of many remarkable people.
When Dickens died in 1870, he was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey – an area known as Poets’ Corner. Canterbury Tales author Geoffrey Chaucer was the first writer to be buried here in 1400 and today you can visit and pay respects to London’s literary greats. Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling and Alfred Tennyson are all buried there.
So the London Book Festival has a rich history and, with a population of over 9 million, it's a big competition. When I looked at the award, I quickly realised there was no romance section, In fact, not only is there no romance section, there's no crime or fantasy section either. And how many crime and fantasy writers are there around now? J.K. Rowling, the aforementioned Kings Cross location user, is one of them. And lots of these books are being made into series on TV, Amazon and Netflix (and where are all the romance series?), with all the publicity that that brings along with it.
It felt like a huge mountain to climb, and so with some trepidation, I entered The Refusal in the "General Fiction" category; the only one for all those aforementioned good books and writers. I wasn't expecting much, so when I got an honorable mention in this award, I was absolutely delighted. It feels like a very special award to get.
